This book forces on what is the meaning of being kind。 And how can some be kind to yourself and to your friends。 As well to consider that there are small things that are considered being kind that most of the time it does not have much importance。

Grade Level: 2nd Genre: Contemporary RealisticThis book teaches about kindness, in a classroom。 A girl spill her grape juice on her dress and the other girls try to help her out。 This book would be great to read aloud if there is bullying in the classroom。

There are a lot of concept books out there about being kind。 What I love about this one is that it weaves the concept of kindness into a narrative that begins with the main character watching a classmate spill grape juice on herself during lunch。 That specific narrative grounds the story in a reality that is familiar to kids and draws them through some of the more abstract ideas about what it means to be kind。 The book opens up plenty of points for discussion and connecting to kids' own lives。 I There are a lot of concept books out there about being kind。 What I love about this one is that it weaves the concept of kindness into a narrative that begins with the main character watching a classmate spill grape juice on herself during lunch。 That specific narrative grounds the story in a reality that is familiar to kids and draws them through some of the more abstract ideas about what it means to be kind。 The book opens up plenty of points for discussion and connecting to kids' own lives。 I love that the story expands, showing kindness spreading all around the world, but also at the end comes full circle, back to the very specific moment from the beginning of the story。 Very nicely done! 。。。more

What does it mean to be kind? This question is answered within this story written by Pat Zietlow Miller。 In the story, a girl named Tanisha spills grape juice on herself, resulting in her classmates laughing at her。 However, one student thinks about what it would mean for her to be nice to Tanisha and goes out of her way to make her feel better。 An inspirational read that is great to use when talking about bullying。

This is such an excellent book。 The illustrations are lovely and add so much to the experience, telling additional smaller narratives along the way。 I love that the main character's gender is ambiguous, allowing children to more easily put themselves in the shoes of this child。 I also love the way that the book takes the conversation about kindness a little bit deeper and gives practical, everyday examples of what kindness can look like and why/how it matters。 Lastly, I'm a sucker for a wordless This is such an excellent book。 The illustrations are lovely and add so much to the experience, telling additional smaller narratives along the way。 I love that the main character's gender is ambiguous, allowing children to more easily put themselves in the shoes of this child。 I also love the way that the book takes the conversation about kindness a little bit deeper and gives practical, everyday examples of what kindness can look like and why/how it matters。 Lastly, I'm a sucker for a wordless but incredibly poignant last page。 。。。more

Pat Zietlow Miller's "Be Kind" picture book is one that gets the mind going about what it means to be kind。 What exactly is kindness? What are ways in which we can be kind to others? Be Kind is a very sweet story about a girl who befriends another girl who spills juice on herself in the lunchroom and thus becomes the subject of some laughter。What I liked best about this story is twofold:1) when she sees someone in need of kindness, the main character is very thoughtful and stops to consider the variety of ways to help make her feel better。 the two girls develop a very sweet friendship。2) Be Kind also mentions several examples of ways to bring kindness to the world: a) differ Be Kind is a very sweet story about a girl who befriends another girl who spills juice on herself in the lunchroom and thus becomes the subject of some laughter。What I liked best about this story is twofold:1) when she sees someone in need of kindness, the main character is very thoughtful and stops to consider the variety of ways to help make her feel better。 the two girls develop a very sweet friendship。2) Be Kind also mentions several examples of ways to bring kindness to the world: a) different ways of givingb) various ways of helpingc) paying attention to othersd) saying “thank you” & “bless you”e) using people’s names-and my FAVORITES-“sticking up for someone when other kids aren’t kind” & examples of being kind to those struggling{Maybe I can only do small things。 But my small things might join small things other people do。 And together, they could grow into something big。 Something really big。 So big that our kindnesses spill out of our school, spread throughout town, travel across the country, and go all the way around the world。 Right back to Tanisha and me。 So we can be kind。 Again。 And again。 And again。} 。。。more

I really liked this book。 Not only did it have a diverse character representation, but it also was short and concise。 The book talked about ways that you are able to be kind and these are among the lessons that I would consider to be very important。 The ways that she tries to fit in with Tanisha after spilling the grape juice shows compassion and kindness that is much needed in our world。

Angie
